Claude SEO: How to Get Your Website Cited by Claude

Claude SEO means making your website easy for Claude to find, read and trust, so it cites you when it answers a question. Claude can search the web, fetch pages and quote them with links. To be one of those sources, your pages must be crawlable by Anthropic’s bots, give a clear answer in the first few lines, and come from a source that looks real and reliable.

I am Nazirul Islam Nakib, a freelance SEO expert in Dhaka. I work on AI search visibility for clients in several countries. If you want help, see my Claude SEO service.

Before the steps, one warning. Many guides on this topic state how Claude ranks sources as if it were published fact. Anthropic has not released a ranking formula. So this guide separates what is documented from what is good practice, and I will tell you which is which.

What Anthropic documents: three bots, three jobs

Anthropic’s own help centre lists three web robots. This is the most useful hard fact in the whole topic, and many guides blur it.

  • ClaudeBot collects web content that may be used to train Anthropic’s models. If you block it, your future content is left out of training data.
  • Claude-User fetches a page when a person asks Claude something that needs it. If you block it, Claude cannot retrieve your page for those questions, which can lower your visibility in user-directed web search.
  • Claude-SearchBot indexes content to improve the quality of search results. If you block it, your pages may not be indexed, which can reduce how visible and accurate you are in search answers.

The practical point: you can decide about training separately from search. A site that wants to be cited usually keeps Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot allowed. Whether to allow ClaudeBot is a business decision about training data, and it is yours to make.

To block or allow a bot, you add a rule for its user agent in your robots.txt file at the top level of each domain and subdomain. Anthropic also says that blocking its IP addresses is not a reliable way to opt out.

Check your robots.txt in two minutes

  1. Open yourdomain.com/robots.txt in a browser.
  2. Look for any rule that says Disallow: / under a wildcard (all bots) or under the three names above.
  3. Check that your security plugin, CDN or firewall is not blocking these bots at server level. This is common and invisible in robots.txt.
  4. Decide your training policy for ClaudeBot and write it down.

If this finds a problem, fix it before anything else. No amount of good writing helps a page the bot cannot reach. A full crawl review is part of technical SEO.

What is not documented: how Claude picks between sources

You will read that Claude favours Wikipedia, ignores marketing language, or uses a particular search engine behind the scenes. I could not find these claims in Anthropic’s own documentation, so I do not state them as fact. Treat any guide that gives exact weights or percentages without a source with caution.

What we can say safely comes from how retrieval-based answers work in general: the system finds pages, picks passages that answer the question, and writes a reply. So your job is to be easy to find, easy to quote and easy to believe.

Seven steps that improve your chances of being cited

  1. Let the right bots in. See the section above.
  2. Put the answer first. Open each page with a direct answer of two or three sentences to the question in the title. Then add depth below.
  3. Write headings as questions. A heading like “How long does a site migration take?” followed by a short direct answer gives a model a clean passage to quote.
  4. Be specific. Real names, dates, numbers you can defend, and first-hand detail. Vague advice is easy to skip, and specific facts are easy to cite.
  5. Make it obvious who you are. A real author, an about page, consistent business details and profiles that confirm you exist. See entity based SEO.
  6. Add structured data where it fits. Schema does not guarantee a citation, but it removes doubt about what a page is. See schema markup for AI search.
  7. Earn mentions elsewhere. Other sites that talk about you make your brand easier to trust. Read building brand mentions and citations AI models trust.

What kind of page gets cited?

  • Clear definitions. A “what is X” page that answers in a few sentences and then goes deeper.
  • Original information. Your own results, tests or data. This is what information gain means: saying something the other ten pages do not.
  • Honest comparisons and checklists. Pages that help someone decide or act, with real trade-offs.

Thin pages that repeat what everyone else says give a model no reason to prefer you.

A real example of what I measure

For one client, a luxury bag store, I tracked appearances in AI answers over time and recorded 3,085 AI Overview appearances and 325 ChatGPT appearances. For another, a digital product brand, Copilot citations grew by 415% in six months. Read the details in the luxury bag AI SEO case study and the Microsoft Copilot case study. I do not have a measured Claude result to publish yet, and I will not invent one.

How to test whether Claude cites you

Most guides say “audit your citations” and stop. Here is a method you can repeat.

  1. Build a prompt set. Write 15 to 20 questions real customers ask, in three groups: general questions (“what is…”), comparison questions (“X vs Y”) and buying questions (“best… for…”).
  2. Run each prompt in Claude with web search on. Use a fresh chat each time so earlier answers do not bias the result.
  3. Record the sources. Note which domains are cited, whether you appear, and which competitors do.
  4. Repeat monthly. Answers vary between runs, so run each prompt more than once and look at the trend, not a single result.
  5. Act on the gaps. If a competitor wins a question you should own, read their page and ask what it has that yours lacks.

Does Claude SEO replace normal SEO?

No. It sits on top of it. A fast, crawlable, well-structured and trusted site does better in Google and in AI answers. If your basics are weak, fix them before chasing AI-specific tactics. For the bigger picture, read GEO vs AEO vs traditional SEO and will AI search replace Google SEO.

Frequently asked questions

What is Claude SEO?

Claude SEO is the practice of making your website easy for Claude to find, understand and cite when it answers questions using web search.

Should I block ClaudeBot?

That depends on whether you want your content used for training. Blocking ClaudeBot leaves future content out of training data. It is a separate decision from Claude-User and Claude-SearchBot, which relate to retrieval and search.

Can I pay to be cited by Claude?

No. Citations are earned with content that is crawlable, clear and trustworthy.

Is Claude SEO different from ChatGPT SEO?

The basics are the same: crawlable pages, direct answers, specific facts and trusted brand signals. Each tool uses its own sources and changes often, so test each one separately. See ChatGPT SEO vs Gemini SEO for two others compared.

How long until I see results?

It depends on your site and competition. Access and content fixes can be picked up in weeks. Brand trust builds over months.

Can you check my site?

Yes. Send your URL through the free website audit and I will reply within 24 hours.
