Site migration SEO expert

A site migration SEO expert who helps you move without losing the rankings you have earned.

Changing platform, domain, structure or design is the riskiest moment in a site’s search life. I plan the redirects, check the new site before launch and watch the results after, so a fresh start does not become a traffic drop.

What it is

What a site migration SEO expert does

A migration is any change that alters your URLs, your platform or your domain. Moving from WordPress to Shopify, switching to HTTPS, merging two sites, rebranding to a new domain, or restructuring your categories all count.

Most traffic loss in migrations has the same causes: old URLs that go nowhere, redirects that point to the wrong place or chain through several hops, pages left blocked from search, or content that quietly changed on the new site. None of it is dramatic. All of it is avoidable.

My job is to keep search engines informed. I map every important old URL to its new home, test the new site before it goes live, and check the result in Search Console for weeks afterwards. The foundation for this is technical SEO, and a pre-move SEO audit tells us which pages are worth protecting.

Types of move

Migrations I plan for

Platform change

WordPress, Shopify, Magento, BigCommerce, Wix or custom builds: where each one tends to break URLs and metadata.

Domain change or rebrand

A new name needs the old domain’s authority carried across with the right redirects and Search Console steps.

HTTPS or subdomain moves

Small-looking changes that can still split signals if handled loosely.

Redesign or restructure

New menus, categories and templates often change URLs and internal links more than people expect.

Merging or splitting sites

Deciding which pages to combine, keep or retire, and where each one should point.

My process

How a migration runs

1

Benchmark the old site

Rankings, traffic, indexed pages and top URLs are recorded, so we can compare afterwards.

2

Build the redirect map

Every important old URL gets one clean 301 to the best matching new page.

3

Check the staging site

Titles, headings, canonicals, schema, speed and crawl rules are tested before launch.

4

Launch with a checklist

Redirects live, sitemap submitted, blocks removed, and key pages checked in minutes.

5

Monitor after launch

I watch indexing, errors and rankings for several weeks and fix issues as they appear.

The difference

A planned migration versus launching and hoping

Planned migration

  • Every key URL redirected one-to-one
  • Staging site tested before launch
  • Benchmarks to compare against
  • Problems caught in days
  • Rankings protected

Launch and hope

  • ✓ Old URLs lead to error pages
  • ✓ Redirect chains and loops
  • ✓ Noindex tags left from staging
  • ✓ No baseline to judge the damage
  • ✓ Months of lost traffic
Good to know

Before and after the move

Moving is a good moment to improve, not just copy. Check the Core Web Vitals of the new build before it launches, and keep your schema markup intact. If you have already migrated and traffic dropped, see SEO recovery.

❓ Common Questions

Site migration questions, answered plainly

Will I lose rankings when I migrate?
A short dip is normal, but a lasting loss is not. With correct redirects, matching content and good monitoring, most sites recover within weeks.
Before the design is finalised. Structural decisions, such as URLs and menus, are far cheaper to get right early than to fix after launch.
A list that pairs each old URL with the new page that replaces it, so visitors and search engines land in the right place and ranking signals carry over.
Search engines usually process the change within a few weeks. Large sites can take longer, which is why monitoring runs for a while after launch.
Yes. I audit what changed, restore missing redirects and correct the issues. See my SEO recovery work for the full process.
I handle the SEO side and brief your developer in clear steps, or make the changes myself where the platform allows.
