The best Magento SEO expert is the one who has fixed the same problems on a store like yours, will talk to you directly, and measures success in organic revenue rather than rankings.

No honest list can crown one name for every store. A small Magento 2 shop and a multi-store Adobe Commerce setup need very different help.

What you can do is ask the right questions before you pay anyone. That is what this guide covers.

I am Nazirul Islam Nakib, a freelance SEO expert in Dhaka, and I do Magento SEO for stores in several countries. So I am not a neutral reader here. I will tell you where I fit and where a bigger team is the better choice.

What does a Magento SEO consultant actually do?

A Magento SEO consultant finds and fixes the problems that keep your catalogue from being crawled, indexed and ranked, then helps your pages earn clicks.

Magento is powerful, but its defaults create SEO work that a Shopify or WordPress store never sees. A good consultant knows these by heart:

  • Layered navigation URLs. Every filter combination can become its own URL. Left alone, a few thousand products turn into hundreds of thousands of near-duplicate pages that eat crawl time.
  • Canonical tags. Magento lets you switch canonicals on for categories and products, and many stores have them off or set badly, especially for products that sit in several categories.
  • URL rewrites and redirects. When product or category URL keys change, the rewrite table grows. Chains and loops follow. Someone has to clean that up.
  • Configurable products. The parent should rank, not every simple-product variant behind it.
  • Speed. Full-page caching, image handling, theme weight and third-party scripts decide how fast the store feels. A consultant will work with your developer on Core Web Vitals.
  • Structured data. Product markup should match what shoppers see: price, stock, reviews. This is also what AI search tools read when they decide what to quote. See schema markup.

If you want the full technical list, my Magento SEO checklist and Magento SEO best practices go through each item.

The Magento 2 SEO guide covers the Admin settings step by step.

Who is the best Magento SEO expert?

The honest answer is: it depends on your store. Anyone who gives you a single name without asking about your catalogue is selling something.

These are the three kinds of help you will find, and who each one suits:

Option Best for Watch out for
Freelance Magento SEO consultant Small and mid-size stores that want to talk to the person doing the work One person has limits. Check how they handle holidays and large projects.
Magento or Adobe Commerce development company with an SEO team Large, multi-store builds where SEO changes ship together with development The person who sells is often not the one who works on your account.
General enterprise SEO consultant Big brands that need strategy and already have Magento developers in house May miss problems that are specific to how Magento works.

I work as a freelancer. If your store is small to mid-size and you want a direct line to the person fixing it, that is a good fit.

If you run a complex multi-store Adobe Commerce build with a large development team, a company with its own developers may suit you better, and I will say so.

9 questions to ask before you hire a Magento SEO expert

1. Which Magento versions and hosting setups have you worked on?

Magento Open Source, Adobe Commerce and older Magento 2 releases behave differently. Ask for specifics, not “I know Magento.”

2. How will you deal with layered navigation on my store?

A good answer talks about which filter combinations deserve to be indexed, which get a canonical or noindex, and how the choice is tested. A vague answer is a warning.

3. How do you decide what to fix first?

Every audit finds a hundred issues. The skill is ranking them by effect on revenue. Ask to see how an SEO audit is written up and whether it ends in a ranked list.

4. Who will actually do the work, and who will I talk to?

You should know the name of the person making changes to your store.

5. How will you work with my developer?

Most Magento SEO fixes need a developer. A consultant who writes clear tickets, tests on staging and checks the result after release saves you a lot of back and forth.

6. What will you report on?

Rankings alone prove little. Ask for organic sessions, organic orders and revenue from Google Analytics, plus clicks and impressions from Search Console.

7. What do you refuse to promise?

Anyone who guarantees a first-page ranking in a set number of days does not understand how search works. Honest consultants talk about direction and evidence, not guarantees.

8. Have you handled a migration or replatform?

Moving from Magento 1 to Magento 2, or to another platform, is the riskiest SEO moment a store has. Ask how they protect redirects, URLs and traffic. This is the territory of site migration SEO.

ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Google AI Overviews now answer shopping questions. Product data, clear category pages and consistent brand mentions all affect whether they mention you.

A consultant who ignores this is working with last year’s map. See my notes on AI SEO.

Red flags when hiring a Magento SEO consultant

  • A promise of rankings or traffic by a fixed date.
  • A fixed package that ignores the size and state of your catalogue.
  • No questions about your server, caching or development process in the first call.
  • Advice that is only about keywords and content, with nothing on crawling and indexing.
  • Refusing to say who does the work.
  • Reports that show a long list of keywords but no orders or revenue.

What to expect in the first month

You should not expect a transformation in four weeks. Search engines need time to recrawl and reassess a large catalogue. What you should expect is clarity:

  1. A crawl and a manual review of your store, with the findings ranked by impact.
  2. A short list of changes for your developer, written so they can be done and tested.
  3. Clean-up of the most damaging issues first, usually indexing waste, canonicals and redirects.
  4. A baseline report, so later progress can be measured against something real.

Rankings and sales follow once search engines have processed those changes. How long that takes depends on your store.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between a Magento SEO expert and a general SEO expert?

A Magento SEO expert knows how Magento creates and handles URLs, canonicals, rewrites, configurable products and caching. A general SEO expert can plan strategy but may miss these platform-specific faults.

Do I need a Magento developer as well?

Usually, yes, or access to one. A consultant decides what should change, and a developer ships it. Some consultants can edit templates and settings themselves, so ask.

Is a freelancer or a company better for Magento SEO?

A freelancer suits small and mid-size stores that want direct contact and a focused scope. A company suits large builds where SEO and development must move together. See how I work with clients.

Does Magento 2 need different SEO from Adobe Commerce?

The core issues are the same. Adobe Commerce adds features such as multi-store setups and staging that bring their own considerations, mainly around hreflang, duplicate content and release process.

How long does Magento SEO take to work?

It depends on the size of the catalogue, how many technical problems exist and how competitive your category is.

Technical fixes can show up in Search Console within weeks. Ranking and revenue changes usually take longer. Be wary of anyone who gives a precise date.

Can a Magento SEO consultant help with AI search visibility?

Yes. Accurate product data, structured markup, clear category pages and consistent brand mentions all help AI tools understand and quote your store.
