SEO vs GEO: The Real Difference and Why Both Matter
Table of Contents

SEO vs GEO comes down to the goal. SEO aims to rank your pages in search results so people click. GEO aims to have your brand named or cited inside AI-written answers. You need both, because they share one foundation.

Picture two people looking for the same service.

One searches Google, scans the links and compares sites. The other asks ChatGPT and gets a short recommendation with a name or two.

Same need. Different journey.

I’m Nazirul Islam Nakib, an SEO specialist. Here is how the two compare and how I’d balance them.

SEO vs GEO at a glance

  • Goal. SEO: rank and earn clicks. GEO: be cited or recommended.
  • Where it shows. SEO: search results pages. GEO: AI answers in ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews.
  • What you measure. SEO: rankings, clicks, conversions. GEO: mentions, citations and the accuracy of what AI says about you.
  • Main levers. SEO: keywords, links, technical health. GEO: clear answers, structure, brand consistency and mentions across the web.

How SEO works

Google crawls and indexes your pages, then ranks them using relevance, quality and many other signals.

The usual work covers search intent, on-page optimisation, technical health and earning links.

The result is a position in a list, and a click if your listing wins attention.

How GEO works

AI tools gather information from several places and write one combined answer.

So the question changes. Not “does my page rank?” but “will this tool understand me well enough to name me?”

GEO work focuses on:

  • Direct, extractable answers on your pages.
  • Accurate structured data.
  • Consistent brand details across the web.
  • Trust signals such as real authorship and reviews.
  • Presence on sources that AI tools often draw on.

Start with what GEO is if the term is new.

Where they overlap

A lot. Both reward helpful content, expertise and a technically sound site.

AI tools also rely on indexed web content. If search engines cannot crawl and understand you, AI tools often will not either.

That is why strong SEO makes GEO easier.

How I’d split the effort

  1. Get the SEO foundation right. Crawlable, fast, well organised.
  2. Rewrite key pages answer-first. Short paragraphs, clear headings.
  3. Strengthen your entity. See entity-based SEO.
  4. Add accurate schema. See schema markup.
  5. Check AI answers regularly. Adjust based on what you find.

Will GEO replace SEO?

Nobody can say for certain. For now, search engines still drive a large share of discovery, and AI tools build on web content.

The safe plan is to work on both. For the term map, see GEO vs AEO vs traditional SEO. For the bigger question, read will AI search replace Google.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between SEO and GEO?

SEO targets rankings in search results. GEO targets mentions and citations inside AI answers.

Do I need both?

Yes for most businesses. They support each other.

Is GEO just SEO with a new name?

Partly. Much of the work overlaps, but GEO adds a focus on extraction, entities and off-site mentions.

How do I measure GEO?

Track whether AI tools name you for your key questions, and how accurately. See AI visibility audit.
