Table of Contents

White hat SEO follows Google’s guidelines and earns rankings by being genuinely useful. Black hat SEO tries to trick search engines for fast results. White hat is slower but lasts. Black hat can work briefly, then get a site penalised or removed.

That is the short answer. The rest of this guide explains the techniques on each side, what the risks really are, and how to tell which one an SEO provider is using.

I’m Nazirul Islam Nakib. In 8+ years and 1,200+ projects, I’ve only ever worked white hat, and I’ve cleaned up after plenty of shortcuts.

What is white hat SEO?

White hat SEO means optimising a site in ways that follow Google’s search guidelines.

You are not tricking anyone. You are helping search engines match the right page to the right person.

Core white hat techniques

Helpful, original content. Pages that fully answer the searcher’s question. Not thin pages written to fill space.

Keyword research based on intent. Understand why people search, then build the page around that. Use keyword research, not keyword stuffing.

Clean on-page SEO. Clear titles, descriptions, headings, internal links and image alt text.

Earned backlinks. Links you get because your content or work deserves them. See link building.

Technical health. Speed, mobile usability, crawlability and HTTPS. Start with technical SEO.

Good user experience. Easy navigation and fast pages keep people reading.

White hat results take time. But they compound. A page that earns trust today keeps working months later.

What is black hat SEO?

Black hat SEO uses tactics that break Google’s rules to push rankings up quickly.

Some of them work for a while. The risk is what comes after.

Common black hat techniques

Keyword stuffing. Repeating a phrase until the text is unreadable.

Cloaking. Showing search engines one page and visitors another.

Private blog networks (PBNs). Networks of sites built only to pass links to a main site.

Buying backlinks. Paid links meant to pass ranking power go against Google’s guidelines.

Hidden text and links. White text on a white background, or links hidden in punctuation.

Doorway pages. Thin pages made to rank, then send visitors somewhere else.

Scraped or spun content. Copying other sites, or running text through a spinner.

Negative SEO. Pointing spam links at a competitor. Unethical, and potentially illegal depending on where you are.

White hat vs black hat at a glance

Factor White hat SEO Black hat SEO
Goal Lasting rankings Fast rankings
Focus People first Search engines first
Typical tactics Quality content, earned links, clean on-page work Stuffing, cloaking, PBNs, bought links
Risk Low High: penalties or removal
Speed Slower Faster at first
Longevity Builds over time Can disappear after one update

Does black hat SEO still work?

Sometimes, for a short time.

But Google keeps improving at spotting manipulation, and AI-based systems are making it faster. The window is shrinking.

The better question is whether the gain is worth losing the whole site. For most businesses, it isn’t.

What a Google penalty looks like

Algorithmic. Rankings fall after an update, with no message. You have to find the cause yourself.

Manual action. A reviewer at Google flags the site. You’ll see a message in Google Search Console, and parts of the site, or all of it, can be removed from results.

Recovery means finding and removing the problem, then waiting. It is slow and never guaranteed.

Is black hat SEO illegal?

Breaking Google’s rules is usually not a crime. But some tactics, such as hacking, fraud or targeting a competitor, can be.

For a business, the practical risk is bigger than the legal one. Losing search visibility can hurt as much as closing a shop.

What about grey hat SEO?

Grey hat sits between the two. Examples include aggressive link swaps or over-optimised anchor text.

It feels safer, but the line moves. What is tolerated today can be penalised after the next update.

How to tell if an SEO provider is white hat

  • They explain each tactic and why they use it.
  • They talk about content, structure and earned authority, not just “getting you to #1”.
  • They set realistic timelines of several months.
  • They give clear reports you can read.
  • They never promise a specific ranking.

Red flags

  • “Guaranteed #1 in 30 days.”
  • “Secret proprietary methods” they won’t describe.
  • Prices far below everyone else.
  • No audit and no plan for content.
  • Reluctance to say what they are doing on your site.

The SEO industry has no universal licence, so anyone can use the title “expert”. Ask questions before you hire.

Even if you didn’t know about a shortcut, the penalty lands on your site. Not theirs.

If your site has already had problems, a SEO audit is the right first step. Or run the free website audit to see where you stand.

Frequently asked questions

What is the main difference between white hat and black hat SEO?

White hat follows Google’s rules and aims for lasting results. Black hat breaks them to gain quick rankings.

Is white hat SEO slower?

Usually, yes. But the results last, and they don’t depend on avoiding detection.

Can I recover from a black hat penalty?

Often, but it takes time. You must remove the offending practices and, for manual actions, request a review.

Paying for links that pass ranking power goes against Google’s guidelines. Paying for real advertising or sponsorship, properly labelled, is different.

The bottom line

Build something that lasts. Create content that genuinely serves your audience, earn links honestly, and keep your site healthy.

That is the ethical way to do SEO, and it is also the smarter one. If you want help, you can hire an SEO expert or visit the home page.
