Local SEO for lawyers means making your firm appear in Google Maps and local results when people nearby search for a lawyer. Start with a complete Google Business Profile, honest reviews, consistent listings and practice-area pages that mention your city.
When someone needs legal help, they usually pick up a phone and search. They want a lawyer who handles their problem and is close by.
This guide is the local side of law firm SEO. For the wider picture, start with SEO for lawyers. For the full service, see my legal SEO page.

What is local SEO for lawyers?
It is the work of showing up when someone searches “personal injury lawyer near me” or “family lawyer in [your city]”.
Google weighs three things for local results: relevance, distance and prominence. You can’t move your office, but you can improve the other two.
Local SEO vs organic SEO
Organic SEO helps your pages rank for broad searches across a country or region.
Local SEO focuses on people near your office. It decides who appears in the map pack, the three listings above regular results.

Most firms need both. The website supports your local listing, and your listing sends clients to the website.
1. Build a strong Google Business Profile
Your profile is the centre of your local presence.
- Claim and verify it.
- Fill in every section with accurate details: name, address, phone, website and hours.
- Choose precise categories. “Personal injury attorney” is better than a generic “law firm”.
- Add real photos of your office and team. Get permission for any client-related images.
- Post updates now and then, such as new articles or office news.
- Turn on messaging only if you can reply quickly.
Use your real firm name. Adding keywords to the name can lead to suspension. See Google Business Profile optimization.
2. Earn reviews the right way
Reviews help rankings, and they help people decide whom to call.
Ask satisfied clients, and send them a direct link. Reply to every review, politely and without sharing confidential details.
Check your bar association’s rules on reviews and testimonials. Never buy or write fake ones. See review management.
3. Keep listings consistent
Your name, address and phone number should be identical everywhere.
Start with the main sites, then add respected legal directories such as Avvo, FindLaw and Justia where they apply in your country. Remove duplicates.

4. Optimise your website for local searches
Keyword research. Think “[practice area] lawyer in [city]” and “[practice area] attorney near me”. Tools such as Google Keyword Planner and Ahrefs can help.
Practice-area pages. One detailed page per service. Mention the city or areas you serve naturally.
Office pages. If you have more than one office, give each its own page with the address, hours, map and local detail.
Contact page. Include your full address, phone, hours and an embedded map.
Schema. Add LegalService or LocalBusiness markup. See schema markup.
Don’t copy one page and swap the city name. Each page must be useful by itself.
5. Get local links
Links from the local bar association, chamber of commerce, community events, charities and local news help your prominence.
Sponsoring or volunteering for something real can earn them naturally. See link building.
6. Make the website work on a phone
Many legal searches happen on mobile, often in a stressful moment.
Your site should load fast and show a tap-to-call button. See Core Web Vitals.
Tools that help
- Google Search Console and Google Analytics (free) for traffic and search data.
- Ahrefs and Semrush for keywords and competitors.
- BrightLocal and Whitespark for citations and local tracking.
- Local Falcon for seeing map rankings by neighbourhood.
Tools help you see what’s happening. They don’t replace the work.
Do it yourself or hire help?
The profile, reviews and basic listings are doable in-house.
A specialist helps in competitive cities, with several offices, or when your rankings have stalled. You can hire an SEO expert or start with a free website audit.
A note on advertising rules
Law firms face advertising and testimonial rules that vary by country and bar association. Check them before you publish claims, results or reviews.
Frequently asked questions
How long does local SEO take for a law firm?
Profile fixes can show movement in weeks. Competitive cities often take several months.
Do I need a separate page for each city?
Only if you serve it genuinely, for example with an office there. Make each page useful and distinct.
How important are reviews?
Very. They influence both rankings and whom people call. Keep them honest and follow your bar’s rules.
Is local SEO enough?
For many firms it is the main driver, but your website and content support it. See the broader guide on how to market a law firm.
